Tim McGraw To Join Hulu Show ‘Southern Bastards’

Tim McGraw is set to return to acting, with a new role in the upcoming Hulu series Southern Bastards, according to Deadline.

The project, which also stars Kevin Bacon and Erin Kellyman (Eleanor The Great), is based on the graphic novel series from Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. McGraw portrays the character Coach Boss, who leads the revered and winning Craw County High School football team in a small Alabama town. In the process, Boss has gained considerable power and influence in a Southern town where football is king.

The series puts McGraw into another football-centered film — he’s known for his work on previous sports-related films including 2004’s Friday Night Lights and 2009’s The Blind Side — but his character this time around seems to have a sinister side.

Kellyman portrays Roberta, a former marine who comes to Craw County as she attempts to end patterns of familial trauma. In the process, Roberta discovers that Coach Boss also spearheads an organized crime ring. Meanwhile, Bacon portrays Earl, the son of a well-known Craw County Sheriff who holds a grudge against Boss over how Earl’s father died.

The Southern Bastards book series won the 2015 Harvey Award for best new series, and the 2016 Eisner Award for best continuing series.

Beyond his work on The Blind Side and Friday Night Lights, McGraw is known for his acting work in shows and films including 1883, Yellowstone and Tomorrowland. McGraw was recently named as an inductee-elect to become a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year. In July, he will launch his headlining Pawn Shop Guitar Tour and will welcome artists including The Chicks, 49 Winchester, Timothy Wayne and Lady A.
