Jorginho speaks out on Chappell Roan security incident as a “misunderstanding”

Footballer Jorginho has described the incident involving his daughter, Chappell Roan and a security guard in Brazil as a “misunderstanding”.

Last month, the former Chelsea and Arsenal player shared a lengthy Instagram post detailing a situation in which his 11-year-old was dealt with by a security guard in a “completely disproportionate” manner, leaving the girl in tears.

It occurred at a hotel in São Paulo and it initially appeared from Jorginho’s post that the guard was working with Roan, who was also staying at the hotel. However, Roan herself responded to the story, saying the guard was in fact not part of her personal security team.

Now, Jorginho, who currently plays for Flamengo in Brazil, has clarified his comments, explaining on Instagram that he made his initial statement “in the heat of the moment, after hearing that my child and wife had been approached by an adult male security guard in an intimidating way”.

“I reacted as any father would,” he added. “My priority is, and always will be, protecting my family, and that is exactly what I did.”

After the incident came to light, a spokesperson for Roan told NME: “Chappell was not aware of any interaction between this mother / daughter and a third party security office. She did not see them at breakfast in her hotel, as she said in her video. She did not direct her personal security or anyone on her team to interact with them. Chappell holds her own teams to the highest standards and has zero tolerance for any kind of aggressive behaviour towards her or her fans.”

The security guard in question, Pascal Duvier, later addressed the situation, taking “full responsibility” for the incident and clarifying that he was at the hotel “on behalf of another individual”, and not Roan.

In his latest statement, Jorginho continued: “At the time, we acted on the information that was available to us. Since then, I have become aware of new information that has changed my understanding of parts of what happened. Chappell Roan made a public statement, reached out privately to [my wife] Catherine, and our teams also spoke directly. It became clear that she had no knowledge of what took place at breakfast and had not asked anyone to approach them. She was understanding and sympathetic to what had happened to our child.”

After Jorginho’s post, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro banned Roan from one of the city’s largest music events, Todo Mundo no Rio, while offering an invitation to the daughter to attend the upcoming edition as an honoured guest.

Despite Roan’s insistence that she was not involved in the incident, there was a significant backlash against her that a data analytics company found was fuelled by a bot-driven smear campaign.

The incident followed Roan’s now-viral encounter with hordes of paparazzi in Paris, in which the pop star said she felt “disregarded as a human” and turned the tables by filming them, with that incident far from the only time that the former NME Cover star has called out intrusive behaviour from fans and paparazzi.

Back in 2024, she divided opinions when she compared fame to “an abusive ex-husband” and vented about the normalisation of extreme fan behaviour, including “stalking, talking shit online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public.”

Prior to that, she had taken to TikTok to share her thoughts on “weird” and “creepy” followers, calling out the “predatory behaviour” of so-called “superfans” that includes “nonconsensual physical and social interactions”, and also hit back at photographers who yelled at her on the VMAs red carpet.

Her statements have been applauded by celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, Rachel Zegler, and Daniel Craig, the latter saying he admires “the guts to say those things”. Olivia Rodrigo also revealed that Roan has been a key support figure in helping her deal with an “overwhelming” entertainment industry.
