You Better Believe Mumford & Sons Brought Jason Sudeikis on Stage to Sing the ‘Ted Lasso’ Theme With Them

The whole Ted Lasso brand is built around moments of life-affirming whimsy and unexpected joy. So it made perfect sense that Captain Positive himself would hop on stage with Mumford & Sons on Tuesday night (Aug. 11) to help out on a rousing rendition of the Mumford-penned Lasso theme song.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, about halfway through the group’s Madison Square Garden gig, cameras panned to the audience and found a surprise guest in the form of the hit Apple TV series’ co-creator and star, Jason Sudeikis, who was seen nodding his head and smiling to the familiar tune at first before sprinting to the stage to join in.

The crowd lost it as Sudeikis ran around the stage, slapping keyboard player Ben Lovett on the butt and then moseying up to lead singer Marcus Mumford to help shout along to the uplifting song’s chorus: “‘Cause, yeah, might be all that you get/ Yeah, I guess this might well be it/ But Heaven knows I’ve tried,” the two men sang face-to-face.

The show’s theme song was co-written by Mumford singer Marcus Mumford and composer Tom Howe and sung by Mumford. The performance ended with Sudeikis and Mumford sharing a big, warm hug before the actor exited the stage to whoops of approval from the crowd.

THR reported that later in Tuesday’s show, Mumford tried to get the audience to quiet down by threatening to “sick Ted on you.” He also noted that he’d worked on the soundtrack for the 2013 Coen Brothers movie musical Inside Llewyn Davis — which starred Oscar Isaac and the singer’s wife, Carey Mulligan —with Isaac coming out later in the gig to perform the film’s folky “Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song)” with the band.

Ted Lasso returned for its fourth season earlier this month, following a retired-from-coaching Lasso as he juggles being a Kansas City dad with the allure or returning to Richmond to coach the city’s new women’s soccer club.

The Sudeikis MSG cameo is in keeping with the actor’s pop-out proclivity. It followed on the heels of his 2026 FIFA World Cup final halftime surprise last month, when he sauntered out as Lasso alongside his bestie, assistant Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), to give Justin Bieber a pep talk before his performance as part of an all-star halftime show featuring Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, Chris Martin and the Muppets.
