Watch Sophie Ellis-Bextor Perform ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ at BAFTA Awards

The 2001 track went viral following Saltburn’s success

Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed “Murder on the Dancefloor during the BAFTAs, the British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards, on Sunday.

Dressed in a black gown with a vibrant, colorful overlay draping the skirt, Ellis-Bextor strutted across the stage backed by a bevy of dancers as she performed her 2001 number, which has been everywhere since it got a second life with the success of Saltburn, which features the track during a pivotal scene.

Ellis-Bextor nabbed her first Hot 100 hit with the song in January, and made her U.S. television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this month, where she was backed by the show’s house band, the Roots. Last month, the song was released on vinyl for the first time

“Murder on the Dancefloor” originally appeared on the singer’s debut LP Read My Lips, but it has seen a resurgence over the past few months thanks to its placement in Emerald Fennell‘s movie Saltburn. The song soundtracks the final scene of the movie where the star, Barry Keoghan, dances nude — a visual that has inspired a trend on TikTok, helping propel the song onto Billboard’s charts and landed it at Number Two in the U.K.

Saltburn received a number of nominations at this year’s BAFTAs, including Outstanding British Film, though it did not take any of the awards home. Keoghan earned a nomination for Leading Actor for his role as Oliver Quick, with Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike garnering nods for Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, respectively. Anthony Willis, who helmed the film score, was nominated for Original Score.
