Watch Maya Hawke Perform ‘Hang in There’ on ‘The Daily Show’

Maya Hawke appeared on The Daily Show to showcase her recent song, “Hang in There,” and to discuss her role in Pixar’s latest film, Inside Out 2. Hawke performed the intimate, acoustic number with two fellow musicians, singing in a tight circle that evoked the folk vibe of the song.

“Hang in There” comes off Hawke’s new LP, Chaos Angel, out now via Mom+Pop. In a statement, Hawke explained that the idea behind the new track “is when you have someone close to you, who’s going through something awful that you’ve been through earlier in your life, and you know that you can’t interfere because they’ll probably isolate themselves from you.”

Hawke sat down with host Jordan Klepper to chat about the album, as well as her role as Anxiety in Inside Out 2. “They’re both ideas and general emotions, but also really well-rounded characters,” Hawke explained of playing one of the emotions in the animated film. “It is kind of a single emotion, but also a whole person, which is a very weird thing to play.”

She added that in her own life she “has a voice in my head going at all times, telling me all the things that I’m doing wrong.” “I just kind of tapped into that voice and put it into the character,” Hawke told Klepper. “So I didn’t do any research. No homework… Just listening to the guy in my head.”

Chaos Angel is Hawke’s third album and spans 10 songs, during which Hawke “catalogs upheavals, revelations, foibles, and broken promises, all while navigating the patterns we repeat while growing older, wandering astray, and finding our way back to some core understanding of ourselves.”

Hawke also recently starred in Wildcat, directed by her father Ethan Hawke. “We had a lot of different ideas about stuff we wanted to work on together,” she told Rolling Stone. “This is the one that happened.”
