Watch Chris Stapleton Improvise a Song About John Stamos on ‘Kimmel’

The musician also performed his single “It Takes a Woman” on the late-night show’s outdoor stage

Chris Stapleton stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to showcase his song “It Takes a Woman” on the show’s outdoor stage and took the opportunity to also perform a brand new number about John Stamos. For the late-night show’s “Wing It and Sing It” segment, host Jimmy Kimmel challenged the country musician to improvise a tune on guitar and vocals with cue cards.

Stapleton, who recently performed on Saturday Night Live, offered a more traditional rendition of “It Takes a Woman” alongside his band on the outdoor stage, which hasn’t been used since February 2020. The musician’s performance will be followed by several other outdoor shows, including from Imagine Dragons, Cage the Elephant, and Incubus.

Along with performing, Stapleton sat down with Kimmel to discuss his career and his whiskey brand, as well as his plans for his epic beard. Kimmel revealed that Stapleton let him pick which song he would play on the late-night show. “Would you have done any song I requested?” Kimmel asked.

“Well, hopefully it would have been off [my] record, but I would have at least considered it,” Stapleton replied. He added that he and his band haven’t played “It Takes a Woman,” which is about his wife, live anywhere, let alone on TV.

“It Takes a Woman” comes off Stapleton’s fifth LP, Higher, which arrived in November. It was produced by Dave Cobb, Stapleton, and his wife Morgane Cobb, and recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville. In February, the musician won the Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for the album’s lead single “White Horse.” Stapleton also recently joined Slash on a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well.”
