Tenacious D are seemingly back, and have shared their first new music since going on hiatus last year.
The duo – comprised of Jack Black and Kyle Gass – have reunited for a new cover of REO Speedwagon’s ‘Keep On Loving You’, which they have made to help raise funds for those affected by the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
The track is set to appear on a star-studded compilation album titled ‘Good Music To Lift Los Angeles’. It arrived on Friday (February 7) via the Good Music Bandcamp page, and also saw contributions from Death Cab For Cutie, R.E.M, The Armed, Health, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Chelsea Wolfe and more.
Proceeds raised from the LP will be donated to the L.A. Regional Food Bank and California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Fund – helping provide support for those displaced by the recent disasters in the city.
The cover comes after the band delivered renditions of the song numerous times over the years. Check out the new cover here, and find a past rendition of the REO Speedwagon track below.
The new rendition of the REO Speedwagon track marks the second cover to be shared by Tenacious D over the past year. Back in March 2024, the duo went viral when they shared their rocked-up version of Britney Spears‘ classic track ‘…Baby One More Time’. This would later appear on the soundtrack to Kung Fu Panda 4, which stars Jack Black in the leading role.
Around the same time, they also received some words of praise from Scottish band Travis, after they launched into a spontaneous cover of the band’s song ‘Turn’ while on stage in Glasgow, then made headlines after covering Oasis’ song ‘Champagne Supernova’ in Brighton.
Both dates came as the band hit the road in the UK as part of the ‘Spicy Meatball’ tour.
Their last original music came the year before, when they shared the standalone single ‘Video Games’ in 2023 and started teasing that they were working on a new album.
Hopes for the new music were later put on hold in July, when Kyle Gass joked about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during their show at the ICC Sydney Theater on July 14 – a day after the now-President was shot in his ear at a campaign rally.
Following the backlash, Black made the decision to cancel the rest of the duo’s tour and Gass apologised on Instagram shortly after, calling his words “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake”. He would later delete the apology that same week.
Gass was dropped by his agent, Michael Greene of Greene & Associates Talent Agency, and Australian federal senator Ralph Babet criticised the comments and called for the duo’s deportation from the country.
In August, Black gave an update on the band’s status and said that Tenacious D will “be back” at a later date.
