Rock Hall of Fame: Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis, Mariah Carey, Sinéad O’Connor Lead Nominees

The nominations of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s Class of 2024 are in — and the list features Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, and A Tribe Called Quest. The winners will be announced in late April, and the ceremony will take place in Cleveland sometime later in the year.

“This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation John Sykes said in a statement. “Continuing in the true spirit of Rock & Roll, these artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

To qualify for this year’s ballot, each nominee’s first single or album had to have been released in 1999 or earlier. Ten of the fifteen nominees (Mariah Carey, Cher, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne and Sade) are on the ballot for the first time. All of them have been eligible in prior years.

This is the third nomination for A Tribe Called Quest and the second for Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, and Jane’s Addiction.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony has been the impetus for many stunning reunion performances over the years. The most notable possible one this year is Oasis, but that’s very hard to imagine considering the fact that Noel and Liam Gallagher remain bitterly divided and focused on their solo careers. It’s also a chance for Ozzy Osbourne to make a rare live performance, the surviving members of Foreigner and A Tribe Called Quest to come back together, and Dave Navarro to play with Jane’s Addiction for the first time since Covid hit.

Amazingly, Cher has never been nominated before, either as a solo artist or as half of Sonny and Cher. “I’m not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!” she exclaimed to Kelly Clarkson in December 2023. “You know what? I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars. I’m never gonna change my mind. I mean, they can just you-know-what themselves.”

With or without Cher, the ceremony will stream live for the second year in a row on Disney+. An edited special will air later on ABC and be available on Hulu the following day.
