La Roux announces new album ‘Old Flames’ with ‘90s-inspired single ‘Cabin Fever’

La Roux has announced a new album, ‘Old Flames’, and dropped the R&B-tinged single ‘Cabin Fever’. Check it out below.

The new record will be the singer’s first since she dropped ‘Supervision’ in 2020, and is set for release on November 6.

Across ‘Old Flames’, La Roux faces the collapse of a 17-year relationship head on, and also tackles themes of forbidden love, loneliness that comes with addiction, and the struggle to reconcile sexuality and identity when in the public eye.

Today (Friday May 8) she shares the first taster of the record with the ‘90s influenced ‘Cabin Fever’.

The track tackles the mental minefield of self-imposed hibernation, and the conflict between the part of you that wants to get out, and the racing thoughts that lure you to stay inside. According to La Roux, it was written at a time when she was feeling “stuck in my head and lost, having to be brutally honest about it in order to escape”.

Check it out below.

As for the rest of the album, the lyrics see the British synth-pop star reference everything from David Lynch to Donnie Darko, and All Saints to Mariah Carey, all while capturing a sound that is both immersive and nostalgic, while also forward facing.

“This record says things how they are: how I am and who I am. It’s been a process of admitting what I got wrong through telling these tales and coming to terms with where I am now,” she said.

“’Old Flames’ is essentially me processing why I’ve behaved the way that I have and saying goodbye to it. It’s a farewell to that way of behaving in love and life. And in music too.”

La Roux burst onto the music scene with her 2009 self-titled debut album, and went on to work with artists to remix her hits. These included DnB frontrunner Zinc who reworked ‘Bulletproof’, and dubstep pioneer Skream and Grammy winner Skrillex both remixing ‘In For The Kill’.

In 2019, she featured on Tyler, The Creator’s boundary-breaking album ‘IGOR’, and the rapper later remixed her ‘Automatic Driver’ track from ‘Supervision’. More recently, she shared a new rework of her 2009 hit single ‘Bulletproof’ with help from Chromeo.

Later this year she will be touring across the US, UK and Australia, supporting Hillary Duff. Visit here for tickets.
