Bono Shares the ‘Tall Tales of a Short Rock Star’ in New Documentary Trailer

Stories of Surrender is set to arrive on Apple TV+ at the end of May

Bono shares some of the most meaningful stories from his life and career in the new trailer for Bono: Stories of Surrender, set to premiere May 30 on Apple TV+.

The doc is described as a “vivid reimagining” of the one-man show Bono performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City in April 2023 (and which was based partly on his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story). The film will feature never-before-seen footage from those shows, along with performances of an array of U2 classics. (The trailer features versions of “City of Blinding Lights” and “Where the Streets Have No Name.”)

“These are the tall tales of a short rock star,” Bono quips at the beginning of the new trailer. The clip goes on to find him discussing how he met his future wife, Ali, the same week he joined U2, and his sometimes complicated relationship with his parents, especially after his mother died. “My father’s response to this tragedy was to never speak of her again,” Bono says, before adding, “I craved my father’s attention, so I sang louder and louder.”

Elsewhere, Bono ruminates on the nature of show business, art, and the particular trick great performers have to pull off. “In pursuit of truth, we are capable of more untruth than most,” he remarks while tipping what appears to be a full pint of Guinness from side to side, only for the “liquid” to remain unmoving in the glass.

Bono: Stories of Surrender was directed by Andrew Dominik. Along with premiering in a standard streamer format, an “Immersive” version of the film will be released for Apple Vision Pro. It’ll be the first feature-length film in Apple Immersive Video, a VR format that will produce a 180-degree video placing viewers onstage with Bono.
