Zayn Begins Countdown to New Album ‘Konnakol’

The musician previewed new material from the record, out April 17, during his residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, including the lead single “Die for Me,” out Friday, Feb. 6

Zayn is shifting gears following the conclusion of his Las Vegas residency. “It’s that time again, I have been lucky enough to make a fifth studio album,” the musician shared on social media, launching the countdown for Konnakol, set for release on April 17. During his run of shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM, Zayn previewed new material from the record including “Die for Me,” the lead single arriving on Friday, Feb. 6.

“KONNAKOL in its definition is the act of creating percussive sounds with one’s voice but what it means to me lies somewhere much deeper. It is a sound that holds the reverberation of a time before words existed,” Zayn said in a statement. “I have always drawn on my heritage for inspiration since I first started making my own music, this album is a development of that understanding, knowing more now than ever, who I am, where I come from and where I intend to go.”

Konnakol follows the 2024 release of Room Under the Stairs, the stripped-back record Zayn created with collaborator Dave Cobb. The album leaned heavily into acoustics with an emphasis on lyrical content. Now, the 33-year-old is returning to the R&B-inflected pop that appeared on his debut album Mind of Mine, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in March.

Like Mind of Mine, which features an interlude performed in Urdu, Konnakol will spotlight Zayn’s cultural background. During his performances in Las Vegas, he teased this element of the album with the image of a snow leopard, a South Asian symbol of freedom and strength. Zayn also opened the set with an unreleased song fans have referred to as “Nusrat,” an Arabic name meaning victory. The set list was a mix of new material presented alongside cuts from Mind of Mine, Icarus Falls, Nobody Is Listening, and Room Under the Stairs.
