The Brighton trio are due to release the follow-up to 2019’s ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’ on March 13 via Distiller. Pre-order/pre-save here.

They’ve previewed the forthcoming LP with a gritty and intense offering, which sees frontwoman Theresa Jarvis reflect on a relationship that can “make you turn animalistic and feral; where you can be ripped apart whilst ripping someone else apart as well”.

Inspired by industrial rock, the sexually-charged ‘Cruel’ features the lyrics: “Drink me up like I hydrate you/ Spit me out like I’m a disease/ Pleasure me until I hate you/ Let me put your mind at ease.”

The heavy track almost found an unlikely place in the Eurovision Song Contest. “During the recording process, we flew in and out of London to audition for Eurovision with it,” explained bassist Alex Crosby. Javis added: “On the Eurovision forums, loads of people were putting our names in and the fans were asking for us, which is why they reached out. But that version had a different chorus, so I’m glad we didn’t get it in the end.”

Yonaka’s new album is described as a “turbo-charged” collection that is “brimming with confidence”. A press release calls the LP a “joyful reclamation” of the band, “wrestled from the brink and pushed into its truest form yet. Satisfaction guaranteed.”

Writing on social media, Yonaka said: “Only now has the time felt right to deliver this record, through love, life and loss.

“Two years in the making and it’s ready to be heard. It’s been a long time coming but really it couldn’t have happened until this moment. We love this record dearly and can’t wait for you to hear all 13 tracks that exist on it.”

‘Hope You’re Satisfied’ was produced by Crosby and Dimitri Tikovoi (Placebo, The Libertines), and sees Jarvis explore matters of the heart. “This record’s about love but it’s not all gooey – it’s the dirty bits and the harsh bits that happen to everyone whether you admit it or not,” she said previously.

Last month, the group shared the visceral comeback single ‘Problems’. A tracklist for ‘Hope You’re Satisfied’ has not yet been revealed.

Yonaka’s debut LP was followed by the ‘Seize The Power’ mixtape (2021) and EP ‘Welcome To My House’ (2023).

Speaking to NME about ‘Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow’ in 2019, Yonaka said they were “ready to start writing the next one”.

Crosby said the band wanted to go “somewhere different, definitely” with their second full-length effort, adding: “We don’t want to do the same thing, our tastes are always changing.”

Jarvis explained: “It’s got to be fresh. I’d love to do a Marvel-themed album.”

Crosby continued: “I think I speak for everyone, we need to do music. Regardless of whether it’s a job or not, it’s something we’d be doing anyway. It’s something we all need in our lives.”

This December, Yonaka will support Don Broco on their UK headline tour. Find any remaining tickets here.
