The cause of death of Oliver ’Power’ Grant, the co-founder and longtime associate of the Wu-Tang Clan, has been revealed.
The producer and fashion mogul’s passing was confirmed by the group’s social media channels on Wednesday (February 25), with a caption reading: “Rest in Power, Power”. He was 52 years old.
Now, it has been confirmed in a statement from Grant’s family and the Wu-Tang Clan, shared with Rolling Stone, that he died after a “courageous and hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer”.
“A true fighter until the end, he was surrounded by his mother, his children, his family, and his closest friends,” the tribute stated.
It described him as a “proud product of the Park Hill neighborhood,” referring to the area of Staten Island, New York that he grew up in, alongside many of the members of the Wu-Tang Clan.
“From those streets, he rose to become a visionary force, a pillar of the Wu-Tang family, and a global architect of culture,” the statement added. “It was the honor of his life to pour his love, wisdom, and brilliance into his family and his community. His impact was singular; there will never be another to take his place.”
“Power will always be loved, and his legacy will forever remain. Greatness is not what you have, but what you give.”
Grant was born in 1973 in Jamaica and raised in Staten Island. He executive produced the group’s early recordings, and oversaw their successful fashion line, Wu Wear, which launched in 1995.
He reportedly made an early financial investment in Wu-Tang Clan in the early ’90s, and raised funds for them to produce their debut single ‘Protect Ya Neck’. He later executive-produced their first album, 1993’s ‘Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’.
After the news was first shared, several Wu-Tang members shared their own tributes.
Method Man wrote: “Paradise my brother safe travels! I am not OK”, while GZA said: “We couldn’t have done it without him. Wu wouldn’t have come to fruition without Power. His passing is a profound loss to us all. My deepest condolences to the fam.”
Raekwon shared: “POWER we been everywhere …. now you everywhere !😢🙏🏾 The most high is merciful love you.” Ghostface Killah posted a series of broken-heart emojis with a “Power” logo depicting an angel.
The news of Grant’s passing follows the announcement that Wu-Tang Clan have been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 2026. However, Grant – who was not a performing member of the collective – was not listed on the Hall’s nominee roster.
