Smith took to social media over the weekend to announce the single, which he has been teasing since earlier in the month. The song, per Smith is due for release on January 30 and will feature Big Sean.

The song’s visual stylings are heavily inspired by The Matrix, with the actor having shared stills of himself recreating some of the film’s most iconic scenes. Last night (January 26), Smith took to social media to share a trailer for ‘Beautiful Scars’ that depicts Smith and Big Sean recreating the “red or blue pill” scene.

In the trailer, Big Sean portrays Morpheus, while Smith portrays Neo. The two reflect on Smith’s career choices, with Sean saying: “Look, you’ve made some awesome career choices your whole life. There’s only one you truly regret. Well, maybe two, but we’re not gonna focus on that one.”

He continues: “So, I’m gonna give you a choice. Blue pill, everything remains the same, and you get to move on with your life. Red pill, you get to go back and star in that movie that got away. The choice is yours.”

After weighing his options, Smith chooses both pills as Big Sean quips: “Shit, that wasn’t even an option”.

Will Smith has been teasing ‘Beautiful Scars’ since January 7, when he shared a cryptic video on social media about him passing up an offer to star in The Matrix in favour of Wild Wild West. Keanu Reeves would go on to star as Neo and turned The Matrix into a phenomenon.

Before revealing that the Matrix-inspired teasers were for a music project, fans believed that Smith was rebooting the beloved film franchise.

Smith has been focusing on his return to music in recent times, making his comeback last year with the single ‘Work Of Art’ featuring his son Jaden and Russ, followed by ‘Tantrum’ with Joyner Lucas.

Both songs are expected to be part of an upcoming album ‘Dance In Your Darkest Days’. The album has yet to receive a release date and will be his first since 2005’s ‘Lost And Found’.
