Weezer Rock Through Hits and Cover Metallica at Coachella Following LAPD Incident

The band still performed at the music fest following Scott Shriner’s wife’s attempted murder chargers

Weezer kicked off the second day of Coachella and rocked through some of their biggest hits on Saturday at the Mojave Stage. For 45 minutes, the band’s tight early afternoon set spanned fan-favorites like “Say It Ain’t So,” “ Beverly Hills,” and “Island in the Sun.”

The band kicked off with their performance with “My name is Jonas,” and then later in the set, they found time to launch into a cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” to the delight of the crowd. Their fans showed up in full force, spilling out past the stage tent area and hanging around near the fences past the performance area. A lot of them held up signs with a “W” symbol, mimicking projection behind the guys. They chanted the band’s name at the end as Weezer concluded with “Buddy Holly.”

Still, their well-received Coachella performance was still marked by some surprising controversy. A recent addition to the festival to fill FKA Twigs’ spot, all four members of the band made it to Coachella to perform, including bassist Scott Shriner, whose wife, bestselling author Jillian Lauren Shriner, was arrested and booked for attempted murder following a shootout with police in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles last week. Shriner allegedly fired her gun at officers and got shot, after police responded to a request to help find hit-and-run suspects and encountered Shriner reportedly wielding a handgun at a nearby residence.

Coachella marks the band’s lengthy slate of upcoming festival appearances. They’re also set to play Glastonbury, Soundside Festival, and When We Were Young festivals later this fall. Weezer also announced a European trek for 2025, with stops in Berlin, Zurich, and Dublin through the summer. “You think we’d go across the pond for one show only? No way!! Europe and UK, see you next summer for a bunch of headline shows and festivals. BRB, we’re already packing our bags,” the band wrote on their site in November.

In 2024, the band celebrated the 30th anniversary of their debut LP and dropped a super deluxe edition of their self-titled project (also known as the Blue Album), complete with demo tracks and live recordings recorded at gigs throughout the Nineties. Weezer also embarked on their Blue Tour to commemorate the album milestone, which included support from The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr.
