Wednesday has added a major star to its cast for season two: Lady Gaga.
Per a report from Entertainment Weekly, Gaga has officially been cast in the hit Netflix series’ highly anticipated second season. Lady Gaga is reported to have already begun filming for the show in Europe.
However, it is currently unknown what role Gaga will play and just how extensive her role in season two will be.
Lady Gaga’s addition to the Wednesday ranks comes after series lead Jenna Ortega in early 2023 said that she would “love” for Gaga to join the show and suggested that Netflix would likely get behind the idea too.
Ortega said of Gaga’s hypothetical role at the time: “I think Mrs. Thornhill and Wednesday had this weird mentor relationship or kind of understood each other in a certain way, so, if Lady Gaga were to be a part, I think it would have to be two monsters that understand each other.”
Prior to Ortega’s pitch, Lady Gaga had shown the series some love in December 2022 when she recreated the viral dance that spawned following the show’s final episode. In a scene from the hugely popular show, Ortega performed a dance to The Cramps’ ‘Goo Goo Muck’, which was then dubbed over with Gaga’s ‘Bloody Mary’ on social media.
The first season of Wednesday scored a four-star review with Alex Flood writing for NME: “Wednesday ends up a rare spin-off success story. It’s creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky – and an absolute treat.”
As for Gaga’s most recent acting role, she starred in Joker: Folie à Deux opposite Joaquin Phoenix. In a four-star review of the film, Matthew Turner wrote for NME: “Phoenix is fantastic once again as Arthur, delivering a compelling and remarkably physical performance that teeters on the edge of insanity throughout – it’s simultaneously chilling and unexpectedly moving. Lady Gaga is equally good as Harleen, sparking palpably insane chemistry with Phoenix, and there’s strong support from both Keener and Brendan Gleeson as Jackie, a prison guard with a fondness for musicals.”
