Waxahatchee Returns to ‘Tiny Desk’ for First Time Since 2013

Her sixth studio album Tigers Blood recently garnered the artist’s first-ever Grammy nomination

Waxahatchee returned to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series for the first time since 2013, this time performing songs from her Grammy-nominated sixth album, Tigers Blood.

“I rolled out of the tour band … I sort of didn’t really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle [of the set],” the artist, whose real name is Katie Crutchfield, shared during her set. “I’m really happy to be back.”

Joined by a full backing band, Crutchfield delivered a much more comfortable, assured, and lively set than her first time at Tiny Desk. After kicking off her performance with her recent single “Much Ado About Nothing,” which she released in October, she ran through three songs off Tigers Blood. She ended the set with “Fire” off 2020 LP Saint Cloud.

Waxahatchee’s sixth album was recently nominated for Best Americana Album at the Grammy Awards. This is her first-ever Grammy nomination. She recently dropped an Apple Music Nashville Sessions EP where she and MJ Lenderman covered Lucinda Williams’ “Abandoned.” Lenderman also appears on Tigers Blood, duetting the song “Right Back to It” with Crutchfield.

Next year, Crutchfield (and Williams, her longtime hero) will perform at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch during SXSW. Crutchfield curated the event, which takes place on March 14.
