Waxahatchee Drops Single ‘Mud,’ Joins Outlaw Fest Lineup

Track marks Katie Crutchfield’s first release of the year

Waxahatchee is hitting the road with Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, and Bob Dylan — and she has a new song to celebrate that. On Tuesday, Katie Crutchfield, who’s behind the indie musical project, released the new single “Dirt” as it was announced that she’ll join the touring Outlaw Fest.

“I’m a fool in angel’s clothing/I’m a glutton for being let down,” Crutchfield sings on the track, backed by guitar and steel guitar. “But I can’t help you, I can’t stick around.” (The track was produced by Brad Cook.)

As for her addition to the Outlaw Music Festival, Waxahatchee will join the stacked lineup led by Dylan and Nelson in September, including stops in Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.

The new track, “Dirt,” is Waxahatchee’s first release of 2025 and comes just days after her album Tigers Blood was nominated for Best Americana Album at the 2025 Grammys, which Crutchfield attended. (Sierra Ferrell’s Trail of Flowers took home the award.)

“I’m so used to [the industry] changing, because it’s the only thing that the music business has done,” she previously told Rolling Stone. “I tried to have this tone in those songs that’s sort of like, there’s whispers of emotion, but it’s also kind of dry and just naming some things. I think you have to try to find some sort of comfort in the discomfort.”

Waxahatchee’s last drop came in October 2024 with “Much Ado About Nothing,” a single followup to March’s Tigers Blood. She’s been releasing albums as Waxahatchee since 2012’s American Weekend. And after a string of indie rock albums (2013’s Cerulean Salt, 2015’s Ivy Tripp, and 2017’s Eye in the Storm), Crutchfield went back to the drawing board for a new sound.
