Experimental indie rock duo Water From Your Eyes are back with a new song, “Life Signs,” set to appear on their upcoming album, It’s a Beautiful Place, out Aug. 22 via Matador Records.
“Life Signs” finds Rachel Brown and Nate Amos digging into the crunchy riffage of late-Nineties, early-Y2k alt-rock, though not without sacrificing the avant-garde twists and turns that are a hallmark of their output. The track arrives with a music video, directed by Brown, that finds Water From Your Eyes trapped in an endless loop of television as both participants in and insatiable viewers of a barrage of shows and commercials.
“Television has always been my biggest passion,” Brown said in a statement, “and this video was mostly conceived from my desire to experiment with the tropes of genre. But I also think the medium lends itself to the idea of fitting an infinite amount of universes into a little box you can keep in your living room. I wanted the video to encapsulate as many worlds as the song does and to express an entire lifetime within a short few minutes.”
It’s a Beautiful Place will follow Water From Your Eyes’ celebrated 2023 record, Everyone’s Crushed. Like previous WFYE records, It’s a Beautiful Place was mostly recorded in Amos’ bedroom, but this time the duo crafted songs with the live show in mind, having expanded to an onstage quartet with guitarist Al Nardo and drummer Bailey Wollowitz.
“We wanted to present a wide range of styles in a way that acknowledges everything’s just a tiny blip,” Amos said of the album’s characteristically broad sonic palette, adding later: “When you’re playing with a band you tend to write with one in mind — this was the first time I wrote anything for WFYE imagining us playing anywhere bigger than a basement.”
Water From Your Eyes will hit the road this fall in support of It’s a Beautiful Place. The trek kicks off Sept. 22 in Philadelphia and wraps Nov. 7 in Denver. During the tour, WFYE will receive support from Her New Knife, Winter, and Dutch Interior on select dates.
