Watch the Weeknd’s Enigmatic Performance of ‘Open Hearts’ on ‘Kimmel’

The song comes off the musician’s new LP, Hurry Up Tomorrow, which is out today

The Weeknd appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to play his new song, “Open Hearts”—with an unusual approach.

For the late-night show performance, the musician stripped the color from the video feed and showcased the dynamic track in black and white while wearing a hood cloak and glowing eyeglasses. After sparks ignited from the lights above, the video switched back to color to reveal an empty audience with only a clapping baby watching. Things took an even more surreal turn from there as the singer followed the baby into an animated landscape.

“Open Hearts” appears on Hurry Up Tomorrow, the Weeknd’s latest LP. The album, out today via XO/Republic Records, also includes previously-released singles “Timeless,” featuring Playboi Carti, and “Sao Paulo,” featuring Anitta. Hurry Up Tomorrow acts as the final of a trilogy, following 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM.

The release of Hurry Up Tomorrow was delayed from Jan. 24 to Jan. 31 due to the California fires. The musician, who also canceled a one-night stadium show in Pasadena, California, said he made the decision “out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County.”

He has since donated $1 million to relief funds in the city, including to LAFD Foundation, GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund, and LA Regional Food Bank. Additionally, proceeds from album track “Take Me Back to LA” will be donated to LA Regional Food Bank, who are providing emergency food assistance to those directly impacted by the LA wildfires.

The Weeknd recently revealed that Hurry Up Tomorrow will likely be his final album under the moniker of the Weeknd. “Everything needs to feel like a challenge. And for me right now, the Weeknd, whatever that is, it’s been mastered,” he told Variety. “No one’s gonna do the Weeknd better than me, and I’m not gonna do it better than what it is right now. I think I’ve overcome every challenge as this persona.”
