The star played a host of tracks from his new album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow‘ alongside hits from his back catalogue at the State Farm stadium.

Kicking off the show with ‘The Abyss’ from the record, the singer greeted fans with a mask with glowing eyes.

He went on to play the likes of ‘Wake Me Up, ‘Opening Night’, ‘Given Up On Me’ before he was later joined by Playboi Carti, who was supporting the singer, for album track ‘Timeless’.

During the set Abel Tesfaye also performed the likes of ‘Starboy’, ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘Take My Breath’ and ‘Save Your Tears’ before he wrapped up with ‘Moth To A Flame’.

The show was the first on his North American tour which will continue at Detroit Ford Field on May 24.

Dates include stops in Inglewood, Toronto, Philadelphia, Denver, Vancouver, Nashville, Miami, Houston and more, and wrap up with a final stop at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on September 3.

The opening night of his tour came ahead of his new feature film which carries the same name as his new album and stars himself, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. Set for release on May 16, the new film is directed by Shults and co-written and co-produced by The Weeknd.

Hurry Up Tomorrow follows a fictionalised version of Tesfaye, who is “plagued by insomnia” and becomes embroiled in an “odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence”.

Ortega also recently appeared in the video for album track ‘Drive’ which sees the duo weaving through amusement parks and large stretches of road in late-night drives.

The Weeknd played:

‘The Abyss’
‘Wake Me Up’
‘After Hours’
‘Opening Night’
‘Starboy’
‘Heartless’
‘Faith’
‘Take My Breath’
‘Sacrifice’
‘How Do I Make You Love Me?’
‘Can’t Feel My Face’
‘Lost In The Fire’
‘Often’
‘Given Up On Me’
‘I Was Never There’
‘Given Up On Me’
‘The Hills’
‘Baptized In Fear’
‘Open Hearts’
‘Cry For Me’
‘I Can’t (Expletive) Sing’
‘Sao Paulo’
‘Until We’re Skin & Bones’
‘Timeless’
‘Rather Lie’
‘Creepin”
‘Niagara Falls’
‘One Of The Girls’
‘Out Of Time’
”I Feel It Coming’
‘Die For You’
‘Is There Someone Else?’
‘Wicked Games’
‘Call Out My Name’
‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’
‘Save Your Tears’
‘Less Than Zero’
‘Blinding Lights’
‘In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)’
‘Moth To A Flame’

‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ was given a four-star review from NME and described as “a fitting – and intriguing – swansong”.

“Though ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ has plenty of his usual moody synth-pop, it’s also speckled with experimentation: he pulls off throbbing Brazilian funk on ‘São Paulo’ and flirts with Kanye-style chipmunk soul on ‘Niagara Falls’,” it read. “If this is a swansong for The Weeknd, it’s a fitting one. Tesfaye is pushing forward before he exhausts the collective fascination with his alter ego, and that’s no small achievement.”

The nods to the album signalling the end of a chapter for Tesfaye relate to his recent comments where he said that he plans to retire his famous moniker.
