In a teaser for last night’s (October 18) episode, where she appeared as both host and musical guest, Carpenter channelled a Cosmopolitan-sipping Carrie Bradshaw in a Sex and the City spoof.

The girlish vibes continued with her opening performance with ‘Manchild’, with the set decked out like a bedroom. While singing the ‘Man’s Best Friend‘ track, she sported pink SNL underwear and danced around the room, later being joined by a sax soloist.

She followed it up with ‘Nobody’s Son’, where she sang in a martial-arts setting in a bejewelled karate gi. Per Variety, the track song stirred up controversy after the East Coast feed showed her singing the words “fucked up” twice, uncensored.

West coast viewers, however, then reported that the audio was cut in those two instances, with censors apparently having more of a tape delay for that feed.

Last night marked the first time Carpenter has hosted the show, but she was previously a musical guest on season 49. The musician was also part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations back in February, at one point appearing in a sketch where she sang an off-key version of ‘Espresso’.

Carpenter has also been announced as one of the headliners of next year’s Coachella alongside Justin Bieber and Karol G. After days of speculation, she was confirmed to be closing out the Friday night of both weekends at the desert music festival.

Coachella 2026 will take place between April 10 and 12, and again on April 17 to 19. As for tickets, you’ll be able to get yours here.

‘Man’s Best Friend’ scored a four-star review from NME, with Nick Levine writing: “Musically, this album isn’t markedly different from its predecessor, though it has a few more country-leaning cuts sprinkled among the daytime disco and featherlight funk.

“It also sticks to Carpenter’s winning formula of pairing sticky melodies with pithy lyrics about the flaws and allure of inadequate males. If there were a Bechdel Test for pop albums, ‘Man’s Best Friend’ wouldn’t be in danger of passing it.”

Meanwhile, Carpenter recently joked that her label “really didn’t give a fuck” about her after learning there were only 200 copies of her debut album made for vinyl.
