This past weekend (August 9), the band performed at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where they closed the show by honouring their fellow hometown heroes Bon Jovi. To end the night, they performed a cover of Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’, which is often dubbed as the unofficial state anthem.
Frontman Gerard Way called for the audience to sing along, and at one point quipped that Bon Jovi’s vocals were “so fuckin’ high”. Watch fan-shot footage of My Chemical Romance performing ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ below.
Earlier in the night, My Chemical Romance were interrupted – right as they began performing a public execution skit before jumping into ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ – by New Jersey mayor Michael Melham, who presented the band with the first-ever keys to their hometown of Belleville.
The band returned the favour by handing Mayor Melham a bunch of wheat and fish from the fictional land of Draag, where the ‘The Black Parade’ is set in. Watch My Chemical Romance receive the keys to Belleville below.
The group are playing their 2006 third album ‘The Black Parade’ in full at their current shows, along with rarities from that era and some hits. At a recent gig in LA, MCR debuted an unreleased song titled ‘War Beneath The Rain’.
They’ve also treated the crowd to a surprise cover of The Smashing Pumpkins’ 1995 track ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’. Each show on the tour features a different hand-selected artist as support, including Violent Femmes, 100 Gecs, Wallows, Garbage, Death Cab For Cutie and Thursday, Alice Cooper, Pixies, Devo, IDLES and Evanescence.
Most recently, they’ve announced an Asia tour for 2026, and are now teasing a run in the UK.
In June, MCR released a deluxe 21st anniversary reissue of their classic second album, 2004’s ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’.
NME gave My Chemical Romance’s 2022 stop at Cornwall’s Eden Project a glowing five-star review, writing: “Tonight’s show is fearless, loose and raw. It genuinely feels like anything could happen, as My Chemical Romance channel punk rebellion and playful ambition. ‘This has been special and amazing,’ says Way, taking the words right out of our mouths.”
That same year, the band shared their first new single in eight years, ‘The Foundations Of Decay’. Despite much speculation about further new material, MCR are yet to follow up on their fourth album ‘Danger Days’ (2010).
