Former NME Cover star and activist Mustafa announced the Artists For Aid benefit show last November. Featuring a star-studded line-up including Clairo, Geese, Pedro Pascal and more, the show took place last night (January 10) in Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium.

The benefit gig, hosted by Pascal and Bella Hadid, raised relief funds for Sudan and Palestine, with all proceeds being donated to the Sudanese Americans Physicians Association and the Palestinian children’s relief funds equally.

Besides the aforementioned artists, the evening also featured performances from Alex G, Blood Orange, Daniel Caesar, Faye Webster, Jazmine Sullivan, Noname, Noor Hindi, Omar Apollo, Raphael Saadiq, Ravyn Lenae, Rex Orange County, Safia Elhillo, Shawn Mendes, Snoh Aalegra, Tamino and 070 Shake.

It also saw the surprise addition of the Roan, who the boygenius singer explained had asked to be a part of proceedings days before. “So, my friend cold FaceTimed me a few days ago and said, ‘Can I come sing with you at the show?’” she told the crowd, who burst into applause as she invited Roan onstage.

The two sang Peter Gabriel’s 2004 track ‘The Book of Love’, which they said they “both really love”.

This year’s edition of the benefit show marked Mustafa’s third Artists for Aid event. The first took place in New Jersey in 2024, and the second took place in July last year in London. The first event saw performances from Clairo, Stormzy, Omar Apollo, 6lack, 070 Shake, Charlotte Day Wilson, Mohammed El Kurd, Nick Hakim and more.

The London edition included Clairo, Blood Orange, King Krule, Bint Mbareh, Daniel Caesar, Earl Sweatshirt, Nicolás Jaar, Ramy Youssef and Yasiin Bey.

Similar charity efforts have included Brian Eno‘s star-studded Together For Palestine concert. Held at London’s OVO Wembley Arena back in September, NME went along and spoke to Eno about the power of music to effect change.

The night saw huge performances from Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, Rachel Chinouriri, Yasiin Bey, and more, and had presenters including Eric Cantona, PinkPantheress, Richard Gere, Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh, and Nicola Coughlan.

The event, which was also available as a livestream, raised just under £1.5million for the ‘Together For Palestine Fund’, which will be distributed to Palestinian-led organisations such as Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service.

That concert came just a day after a UN commission inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel continues to deny accusations of genocide or war crimes.
