“You may remember it from the movie Clueless,” the singer said of the 1995 track
Kelly Clarkson took it back to 1995 for her latest Kellyoke cover. The singer revamped the Nineties Britpop classic “Alright” by Supergrass.
Clarkson was the picture of a carefree queen as she performed the upbeat song, smiling and dancing along while wearing a simple white shirt and trousers. The singer used her signature vibrato to refresh the hit song, while her backing band, My Band Y’all, stayed true to the track’s piano-laden melody and synth production. As Clarkson trilled the lines “We are young, we run green,” emerald lights glowed behind her.
“Back in 1995 was when that came out,” Clarkson said of the track. “You may remember it from the movie Clueless, which came out that same year.”
Originally released on Supergrass’ debut album I Should Coco, “Alright” was popularized by the teen comedy, which starred Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, and Paul Rudd. Clueless featured the track in one of the film’s scenes where protagonist Cher (Alicia Silverstone) directs an impromptu photoshoot of the movie’s popular high schoolers and includes newcomer Tai (Brittany Murphy). “Alright” was also included on the Clueless soundtrack, which helped it reach Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Since then, Supergrass have released five more full-length albums. To date, “Alright” still remains the band’s most commercially successful song.
