The Black Keys surprised fans at the 2025 edition of Shaky Knees by bringing out Johnny Marr as a surprise guest. Check out footage of the moment below.
The Ohio rock duo were midway through their set at the Atlanta festival over the weekend when they caught fans off-guard by bringing out the iconic songwriter, guitarist, and former Smiths star.
Marr joined them for ‘Everlasting Light’, a song which Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney shared back in 2010 as part of their fan-favourite ‘Brothers’ album.
Fans have shared footage of the collaboration at Shaky Knees online – which you can see in the second slide of the first post below – and Johnny Marr also celebrated the moment after the set by taking to Twitter/X to share a photo of the moment.
“Love to The Black Keys. Good times,” he wrote in the caption.

During their set at Shaky Knees, The Black Keys opened with ‘Gold On The Ceiling’, before breaking out tracks like ‘Next Girl’, ‘Man On A Mission’, ‘Howlin’ For You’ and more.
After the appearance from Johnny Marr, they closed out with the title track from their latest album ‘No Rain, No Flowers’, as well as ‘Tighten Up’, ‘Little Black Submarines’ and classic track ‘Lonely Boy’.
Last month, the duo spoke about their plans for new material, and said that they are planning on making more hip-hop music in the future.
It comes as they have previously teamed up with rapper Jim Jones and Roc-A-Fella head honcho Damon Dash on the 2009 album ‘Blackroc‘, which featured the likes of Q-Tip, Mos Def, RZA and Raekwon.
“We’ve never really talked about it. I mean, we had some extra stuff. I think we could do something with the right hip-hop artist, that would be fun,” Carney said, while Auerbach added: “I don’t think it would necessarily be a Blakroc thing. I don’t think we’re going to work with Damon (Dash) again, but we do love hip-hop, and could definitely see ourselves doing something with someone at some point.”
Their latest album, ‘No Rain, No Flowers’, arrived on August 8 via Easy Eye Sound/Parlophone, and came after the pair were forced to scrap a whole tour and part ways with their management.
Speaking to NME about the fiasco, Auerback said: “ We were extremely frustrated after we had a tour cancelled. There was more to it than the tour, it’s a big, long story, but ultimately making this record helped us work through it.”
“We’re still feeling the negative effects of the relationship that we had to break up with,” he added. “It still is under our skin and pisses us off, but making this record definitely was helpful. We needed to get in there and create, in order to work through our emotions.”
For Marr, the slot with The Black Keys comes after the took to social media last week to accuse the UPS shipping company of losing track of some guitars he was trying to transport.
“Dear UPS where are my guitars?,” Marr wrote. “They disappeared a week ago. I’m hearing from you now that they’ve been lost. Explain.”
He then shared a string of posts tagging UPS, alongside the hashtags #fuckUPSinc #freemyguitars, adding: “Asking me to describe what my guitars look like is not filling me with confidence. They look exactly like the ones you put in one of your a delivery vans days ago. Remember?”
