Watch Green Day’s ‘Corvette Summer’ video starring Mark Hamill: “Rev those engines!”

Green Day have shared the official music video for their latest single ‘Corvette Summer’, starring Mark Hamill. Watch below.

The band teased the “turbo-charged” visuals for the ‘Saviors’ song last week, confirming that they would appear alongside Star Wars legend Hamill and actor/comedian Hannibal Buress.

“Rev up those engines, the ‘Corvette Summer’ music video is here and it’s one wild ride!!” Green Day said in a statement, before going on to explain the concept of the new clip.

“The song was named after one of our favourite cult classic movies [1978 adventure comedy Corvette Summer], so it only made sense to pay homage to it with the music video,” they wrote.

“We even took things one step further and got Mark Hamill – who starred in the original [as Kenneth W. Dantley Jr.] – to star in our remake alongside us, Hannibal Buress, and some others.”

The trio continued: “We blew the entire budget on them, so we had to get creative with cardboard boxes, some duct tape and matchbox cars we found in Tre’s basement. Directed by the dynamic duo Ryan Baxley & Brendan Walter. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride!”

The low-budget-style visuals begin at Coma City Junior High School where a class are sharing what they got up to over the summer. Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt – who portray students – tell their teacher (Buress) that they made a video, and play a VHS of it for their classmates.

Later, we see Armstrong and Cool steal Dirnt’s red Corvette. The latter band member then tells the police what happened, but they respond: “Sorry, son. That car’s halfway to Canada by now.”

The frustrated bassist eventually joins forces with Hamill, and the pair manage to retrieve the vehicle. Armstrong and Cool vow to “boost it back” before they end up playing a game of chicken with Dirnt and Hamill in the desert.

You can watch it all unfold in the video above.

In a four-star review of ‘Saviors’, NME noted that ‘Corvette Summer’ “channels AC/DC and Thin Lizzy rock’n’roll hedonism”.

Green Day embarked on the UK and European leg of their ‘Saviors’ stadium tour earlier this summer, and are scheduled to begin the North American leg next week. Find any remaining tickets here.

NME gave Green Day’s show in Manchester last month a full five stars, writing: “With Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer all playing UK shows over the month, it’s an understatement to say rock fans are spoilt for choice.

“The pick of the bunch, however, might just be Green Day’s ‘Saviors’ tour: combining class, youthfulness and scruffy punk anthems into a trademark stadium-rock event.”
