Doja has been steadily teasing new music since spring, previewing songs on Instagram for her upcoming album, ‘Vie’. She shared the tracklist back in April, and also gave fans a snippet of the ’80s-inspired ‘Jealous Type’.

On the first night of San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival on Friday (August 8), the rapper and singer unveiled a new look that was equally retro-influenced – sporting platinum blonde hair and a zebra-striped jumpsuit for her headline set, where she debuted the shimmery pop track.

Produced by Jack Antonoff and Ari Starace, ‘Jealous Type’ had previously been used in a Marc Jacobs campaign, signalling to fans that the new album may be a return to the more pop-focused sound Doja was known for before the ‘Demons’ era.

Opening her set with ‘Woman’, she stormed through a 21-song setlist that included hits like ‘Say So’, ‘Paint the Town Red’, ‘Agora Hills’ and ‘Need to Know’. Alongside ‘Jealous Type’, Birds of Prey soundtrack number ‘Boss Bitch’ got its first live outing at Golden Gate Park.

One of the biggest moments of the show came when she announced that she’d be rounding off the night with a surprise appearance at San Francisco drag club Oasis, which is set to close its doors by the end of the year.

“I’m taking my new project, Vie, to club Oasis,” she told the crowd. “See me there. I’ll be playing some new songs and going the fuck home.”

The unannounced gig at the iconic LGBTQ+ venue immediately sparked frenzy as festival-goers raced to get taxis to the venue. Oasis then confirmed on social media that tickets would be available at the door until their 531-person capacity was met.

Videos shared by fans at the event show Doja playing two unreleased ‘Vie’ tracks in ‘Take Me Dancing’ and ‘Cards’.

‘Vie’ will mark her first LP since 2023’s ‘Scarlet’, and while she hasn’t dropped a new album since, she did release a collaborative track with Jack Harlow titled ‘Just Us’ earlier this year, which was accompanied by a star-studded video featuring the likes of Matt Damon, John Mayer, PinkPantheress and Succession actor Nicholas Braun.

Doja’s last album, ‘Scarlet’, was released in 2023 and it scored a three-star review from NME: “It all adds up to an overlong, slightly repetitive but ultimately compelling album of two halves… Still, by this stage, there’s no doubt that Doja has made her point – that she doesn’t owe us anything but to be herself.”

She also gave a performance at the Oscars in March, singing ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ as part of a James Bond medley. She later admitted to having felt nervous ahead of it and conceded that she “hit some flats”.
