Watch David Gilmour Showcase ‘Dark and Velvet Nights’ on ‘Fallon’

The musician was joined for the performance by house band the Roots

David Gilmour stopped by The Tonight Show to perform his recent song, “Dark and Velvet Nights.” The musician was joined by house band the Roots, as well as four backup singers, for the dynamic performance.

“Dark and Velvet Nights” comes off the Pink Floyd member’s new LP, Luck and Strange, which dropped in September. The album marks Gilmour’s first new solo album in nearly a decade, following 2015’s Rattle That Lock. The title track features keyboards by Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright, which was recorded at Gilmour’s house in 2007.

Gilmour sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the album, as well as the rumor that The Dark Side of the Moon was written to synchronize with the film The Wizard of Oz. Fallon asked Gilmour if he’s been affected by the many five-star reviews the album is getting, to which the musician admitted that “of course” he cares about the response to his work.

“You can’t help having a look,” he said. “And raging at the ones that have given you three [stars] and said something dumb in them.” He added of the LP, “To me this is very special.”

Fallon later asked Gilmour about several rumors, including that the musician was once a model. Gilmour confirmed the modeling career was true, noting that “it was a way of building up my resources to buy a new guitar or something I actually needed.”

As for the The Wizard of Oz connection to Pink Floyd’s seminal album, Gilmour brushed off the rumor. “I only heard about it years later,” he told Fallon. He said he has tried synching the vinyl LP to the movie, although now it’s available online. “There are these strange coincidences,” Gilmour said. “I’ll call them coincidences.”

Gilmour is currently on tour in support of Luck and Strange. He is scheduled to perform two more nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City this weekend.
