The moment took place during Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance yesterday (April 19), with Dudamel’s set marking the culmination of his 17-year tenure as conductor of the orchestra, before he departs to lead the New York Philharmonic next year.

In celebration, the set featured multiple surprise guest appearances, with Cynthia Erivo joining to cover Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, and Laufey, Natasha Bedingfield, and Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso also coming out.

At one point, Grohl surprised the audience when he walked onto the stage to perform renditions of Foo Fighters’ ‘The Sky Is a Neighborhood’ and ‘Everlong’, with the backing of the orchestra.

Check it out below.

It marks Grohl’s first time performing a Foo Fighters song since last summer, when he revealed that he had “recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage”. He added: “I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.”

The band subsequently cancelled their scheduled headline slot at the Soundside Music Festival. Foo Fighters currently do not have any live dates in their calendar.

Following the revelation about Grohl’s new daughter, the musician’s representatives debunked a viral “love child” post circulating on social media – in which an Instagram user claimed to be the mother of the baby.

In the meantime, he’s reunited with Nirvana for a surprise appearance at the FireAid benefit concert. This saw them perform with St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Grohl’s daughter Violet to deliver a number of greatest hits.

Later, he teamed up with his former bandmates again, this time alongside Post Malone, for the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Saturday Night Live.

In other Coachella weekend two news, A.G. Cook brought out Kesha as a guest for ‘Yippee Ki Yay’ and Lady Gaga suffered technical issues, but used the mishap to joke with fans about singing live.

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong also came out in a ‘Brat’ hat during their headline slot, seemingly squashing rumours of tensions between them and Charli after their fans warred on social media.

Elsewhere, Kneecap led a “free Palestine” chant during their set, after the trio’s pro-Palestine messaging was reportedly cut from the weekend one livestream.

Other artists on the bill include Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, with solo performances coming from BLACKPINK‘s Lisa and Jennie, Benson Boone, the original Misfits, Zedd, The Prodigy, Beabadoobee, Clairo, Enhypen and more.

YouTube will be livestreaming the festival via the Coachella YouTube channel. Check back here to see our latest Coachella updates.
