Watch Blake Shelton Showcase Hit Single ‘Texas’ on ‘Fallon’

The musician also discussed being inspired to create new music after collaborating with Post Malone

Blake Shelton stopped by The Tonight Show to perform his recent chart-topping single “Texas.” The country musician took the stage alongside his band for the rollicking tune, which reflects on a free-spirited woman who’s vanished from his life (but who is probably in Texas).

Shelton released “Texas” in November as the lead single from his new album, For Recreational Use Only, which arrived on May 9. The mid-tempo track was inspired by the music of country singer Ronnie Milsap, one of Shelton’s heroes.

“The thing that struck me about ‘Texas’ immediately was how different it sounded for me, and I’m always looking to push myself,” Shelton explained in a statement at the time. “I think there’s something really special about this record and important for me.”

Shelton sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the song, his album, and his collaboration with Post Malone on “Pour Me a Drink.” Shelton reflected on what it meant for “Texas” to become his 30th No. 1 single. “I had a big party down in Frisco, Texas, which is where all the big parties are,” he said. “I didn’t know chart position. I’m not going to predict something like that. But I thought it sounded like something that would be an earworm.”

He added that Post Malone “lit a fire” under him after they collaborated last summer. “I had the song with him and you can’t be around that guy without having a good time,” Shelton said. “He’s just so excited about everything… I was like, ‘Man, what am I doing? I need to make a record.’ He had me fired up again from that song.”

Elsewhere on the late-night show, Shelton joined Fallon for a round of “Best Friends Challenge.”
