Last month the Baltimore band played at Brown’s Island venue in Richmond and as is customary at their shows, they encouraged fans onto the stage to join them during their performance of ‘Birds’.

Footage of several stage divers leaping offstage and parading onstage was uploaded onto YouTube shortly after the set, but has only recently gone viral, thanks in particular to one fan’s daring feat.

The beginning of the clip below sees a fan dive offstage, clearing the massive gap between the edge of the stage and the barricade, jumping over the security and photo pit. While the fan was able to clear majority of the jump, it appears that he was able to rotate himself so only the back of his legs crashed into the metal barricade.

The rest of the clip sees fans jumping over the barricade to rush the stage as security scrambles to ensure no one gets on the mic and protects the band.

The same Virginia gig made headlines last month after a young fan was pepper sprayed by a sheriff’s deputy during the same performance of ‘Birds’. Footage shows the official brandishing a can of pepper spray and fire it directly into the face of one fan. Bassist Franz Lyons, who is stood nearby, is seen to recoil and cover his eyes.

Richmond Sheriff Antoinette Irving previously announced that the incident was under investigation and bodycam footage has surfaced with the fan describing what happened.

Speaking about the incident recently frontman Brendan Yates described it as: “A cowardly action from an officer coming in and spraying a 15-year-old kid and then walking away – I don’t think that’s an isolated event. But at our shows, it was a new thing. It’s something that we strive to keep away.”

The band are due to head across the pond for a UK and European tour, which kicks off in Dublin today (October 31). It’ll see them head to the UK for shows in Glasgow, Manchester and London. Then, they’ll take the tour to Hamburg, Amsterdam, Milan, Paris and more, before wrapping up in Madrid on November 27.

Tickets are available here for UK shows, and here for international dates.
