Tom Morello to Drop First Solo Rock Album With ‘Anti-Fascist’ & ‘Anti-Racist’ Songs

Tom Morello‘s idea of “Date Night” isn’t exactly dinner and a movie. The rocker just dropped a new song on Tuesday (July 28) paying homage to three young women who lured Nazis to their deaths during World War II, one of several anti-fascist songs on his newly announced album, Everyone Gets Everything They Want.

Featuring raging guitar from Morello’s teenage son Roman, “Date Night” is written from the perspectives of sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, who, as teenagers, worked alongside close friend Hannie Schaft to seduce Nazi officers and assassinate them in the woods. The women also smuggled weapons, sabotaged railways and helped Jewish children evade capture.

“I can’t believe it got this late, I must be getting home/ Perhaps you will escort me, I live a good ways down the road,” the iconic Rage Against the Machine guitarist sings on the headbanging track. “We killed them in the ditches, we killed them in the streets/ We killed them in the forest, in the fields and on the beach … It’s date night and I never felt so alive.”

Morello also revealed on Tuesday that his next LP will arrive Sept. 25, featuring “Date Night” as well as previously released tracks “Adjourn It,” “Everything Burns” featuring Beartooth, “Pretend You Remember Me” and “Soldier in the Army of Love.”

“I make anti-racist songs for anti-racists,” the politically outspoken musician said in a statement. “I make anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists. And I make anti-Nazi songs for anti-Nazis. ‘Date Night’ is really a ‘Which side are you on?’ song. If any of that offends you, do the math.”

Everyone Gets Everything They Want will mark Morello’s first-ever rock full-length as a soloist, though he’s previously released albums on his own as The Nightwatchman, three of which have landed on the Billboard 200. As a member of Rage, the guitarist notched seven entries on the Billboard 200, including two No. 1s: Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999).

Five of the tracks on the upcoming project will feature Roman as a cowriter, while Serj Tankian and Kneecap will also make appearances.
