Duncan Sheik, the Tony Award-winning composer of the hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening, has died aged 56.
Sheik died of organ failure at a hospital in Manhattan on Thursday night (September 17), which followed his family putting out a statement earlier this week saying the composer was “receiving medical care” and was in “critical but stable condition”.
In a follow-up post shared on Friday (September 18), his family wrote: “The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit ‘Barely Breathing’ to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
“Duncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Sheik had been working on the new musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, which is slated to begin preview performances next Friday (September 25) at new Off-Broadway venue, The Night Egg at the Culture Club.
A revival of Spring Awakening, which won Sheik two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, is also set to open Off-Broadway in the coming months.
Sheik co-wrote the score for the musical with Steven Sater. It’s original Broadway ryn starred Jonathan Groff, John Gallagher, Jr. and Lea Michele – who took to Instagram to pay tribute to Sheik.
“I met Duncan when I was 14 years old,” the Glee star wrote alongside a photo of them together shared on her Instagram story. “I listened to a demo on tape of him singing songs from Spring Awakening outside of my middle school before my first audition.”
She added: “I’m at a loss for words. This one hurts and does not seem real. Thank you for everything you gave us. And for the time we had together. Sending all my love and prayers now to Nora, Ines, and Duncan’s family.” Her Instagram story also featured her singing ‘Mama Who Bore Me’ from the musical, alongside him playing guitar in a rehearsal space.
Singer and DJ Bright Light Bright Light joined Michele in memorialising Sheik, taking to social media to write: “Absolutely devastated to hear that one of my favourite artists has died. As a teenager I imported all his albums to my house in Wales, and dreamed of being a songwriter living in New York like him.
“Well, I did it – and I thank him endlessly for inspiring that. I listened to his first 4 albums on loop for years and I learned so much from his songwriting and arranging majesty. Congratulations on your sparkling legacy Duncan, rest well.”
Orange Is the New Black star Kimiko Glenn, who starred in a national tour of Spring Awakening, said: “The world really could’ve benefited from a couple more decades of your music, but life has a way of doing its own thing. For better or for worse. Your legacy will live on forever, Duncan. I love you so much. I miss you already.”
Scream actress Melissa Barrera said Sheik had “created the score of my teenage years. When he came to Mexico City for our premiere we were all freaking out. He told us our version of ‘Purple Summer’ was the most beautiful he’d heard. You will be missed but you will live on en la canción del Verano Violeta.”
As well as his theatrical contributions, Sheik released several albums, including his 1996 self-titled debut, which included his hit song ‘Barely Breathing’, and released his most recent, ‘Claptrap’, in 2022.
Sheik is survived by his partner, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter Ines.
