The Beatles musician shared his all-time album line-up as part of an ongoing segment on his website, ‘You Know The Answer’, in which McCartney responds to one question from a fan.
This month’s came from a fan named Alex, who wrote: “My partner and I have recently been discussing the albums and songs that have soundtracked our lives. Are there any albums that take you back to certain periods in your life? And does performing your own music evoke similar memories?”
In his considered response, McCartney listed records by The Band, The Beach Boys and Neil Young as ones that have stuck with him. “My favourite albums by other people tend to be: ‘Music from Big Pink’ by The Band, ‘Pet Sounds’ by the Beach Boys, and ‘Harvest’ by Neil Young,” he said.
“They are the three classics that I love to listen to, and they all remind me of certain times in my life. When I perform my own songs, the great thing is that they often bring back memories of recording them. That can often entail memories of John and George in the studio – sweet memories!”
Following the death of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson earlier this month, McCartney shared a moving tribute sharing his strong admiration for the late singer.
“Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special,” he wrote. “The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while.
“How we will continue without Brian Wilson, ‘God Only Knows’. Thank you, Brian.”
After news of Wilson’s passing broke, fans were quick to recall the close bond the two artists had and the high praise McCartney had shared for the songwriter over the years, and many recalled he once called ‘God Only Knows’ “the greatest song ever written”.
Meanwhile, Macca himself has been on the receiving end of praise from several artists recently.
Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne recently said he would be “honoured” to collaborate with McCartney, while Beyoncé thanked him for “writing one of the best songs ever made” as she closed out her ‘Cowboy Carter’ run in London.
