Singer now in stable condition after he was hunting alone and his firearm “slipped out of the holster, hit the side of the jeep and discharged into his stomach area”
Sundance Head, the country singer who won The Voice in 2016, was hospitalized Friday after accidentally shooting himself near his Texas ranch.
The singer’s agent told CBS News that Head was hunting in the woods alone when he accidentally shot himself once in the stomach when his firearm “slipped out of the holster, hit the side of the jeep and discharged into his stomach area.”
The singer is currently in stable condition, his wife Misty Head added on her husband’s Facebook account.
“It was not his hunting rifle and no nobody shot him,” Misty Head wrote. “He was out of the vehicle reaching in to grab his 22 when he grabbed it the 22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off. Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging.”
Misty added that the bullet “went in above his navel and lodged into his abdominal wall” and missed “all vital organs.”
“He will not require surgery as they are not removing the bullet,” she added. “I’m sure [his doctor] said why but my head is in a fog right now. Him being on the bigger side was a good thing. Bullet is in his fatty tissue.”
Misty Head added that her husband did not bring his cell phone with him, but was able to flag down another vehicle, and that motorist called 911. Sundance was then taken to the hospital.

“He’s in good spirits considering the last several hours,” Misty continued. “Kids are in with him now. Prayers answered as no internal damage was done by the bullet. Thank you all for the prayers.”
