The Super Bowl Was Already Getting Political. Now Green Day Has Entered the Chat

Green Day are set to perform at the Super Bowl‘s opening ceremony — and we’re about to see some MAGA meltdowns.

The East Bay punk rockers were tapped as hometown heroes to celebrate the championship’s 60th anniversary, taking place in Santa Clara, California, and will “usher generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field,” per a press release from the NFL. While Green Day hasn’t shared any set-list details, the band’s pointed political shows have become tradition for them in the past few years.

Just this week, Green Day day used their platform to support anti-ICE protestors in Minnesota and criticize the Trump administration while performing at the 2026 iHeartRadio ALTer Ego concert series. “This song is anti-fascism. This song is anti-war. We stand up for our brothers and sisters in Minnesota,” Billie Joe Armstrong told the audience before barreling into “Holiday.”

Then, before launching into the song’s interlude monologue, Armstrong sneered, “Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Miller now has the floor.” (The interlude speech, which is “delivered by” an unnamed representative of California in the original song, begins with the lines, “Sieg Heil to the President Gasman/Bombs away is your punishment.”)

This kind of anti-fascist rhetoric is nothing new for Green Day. Throughout performances over the past couple of years, the band has led its audiences in “Fuck Donald Trump” chants and pointedly changed its “American Idiot” lyric from “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”

Green Day’s outspoken energy will set the stage for Bad Bunny‘s headlining set during halftime, which has already threatened the MAGA agenda — and pissed off Trump and his supporters. As soon as the Latin superstar was announced to headline the Super Bowl, the far right flipped out over Benito’s Spanish-language music and comments against ICE, with the conservative organization Turning Point USA going as far as planning an alternative halftime show.

“I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s crazy, and then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Trump said about Bad Bunny’s role as the Super Bowl halftime-show headliner. Last year, the president attended the Super Bowl as the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s unclear whether Trump will be in attendance this year, but if so, the chance of his fury has doubled.
