The Marías Imagine a New Reality in ‘Sienna’ Performance on ‘Kimmel’

The Marías’ front woman, Maria Zardoya, witnessed her vision come to life during the group’s latest Jimmy Kimmel Live performance. “Sienna,” from their most recent LP Submarine, considers the prospect of having a child and seeing familiar characteristics within them. For the performance, Zardoya was joined by a young girl with the same jet black hair and bangs. “I feel seen,” she sang. “Only through you.”

Later in the song, nine more children appeared lining the stage as they provided backing harmonies, helping her to sing, “Ooh, Sienna/Would’ve been cute/Ooh, Sienna/Would look just like you.” Smoke and haze covered the dimly lit stage, adding a dreamlike sense to the record that emphasizes its impermanence.

Submarine arrived in May 2024 and featured the singles “Run Your Mouth,” “Lejos De Ti,” and “If Only” / “No One Noticed.” Last month, Zardoya announced her debut solo project, Not for Radio.

“I wanted to explore on my own what it meant to love and to lose,” she shared at the time. “And I keep asking myself the question: Is love worth the pain? If there’s a pain that only love can cause — the ache of someone’s absence, of knowing that they once lived there inside your home, tangible and tender — but now reside only inside your memory. What do you think, Is love worth the pain? I’m ready to find out.”

The fate of the Marías, she assured, is safe. “I love making music as the Marías, and nothing will ever change that,” she said. Later this month, the group is scheduled to head back on tour. Earlier this year, they shared the singles “Back to Me” and “Nobody New.” They also made an appearance on the Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco collaboration “Ojas Tristes.”
