The Coral re-record entire 2002 debut album in retro video game format

The Coral have re-recorded their entire 2002 debut album in 8-bit retro video game format – check out ‘Shadows Fall’ below.

The Merseyside band’s self-titled debut record included singles such as ‘Dreaming Of You’ and ‘Goodbye’, and now they are giving fans a chance to hear the songs like they never have before.

Co-founder and bassist Paul Duffy has reworked the album into the lo-fi format, with ‘The Coral Caves Of Illusion – Debut Album Celebration’ set to be released on September 5 via AV8 Records – pre-order it here.

He used the miniBit platform to craft the album, driven by the premise: “How do I make it sound like my favourite level on Sonic or Mickey Mouse’s ‘Castle Of Illusion’?”

Explaining how the project came about, Duffy said: “We were in the process of filming the documentary and James asked Nick Power (keyboards) if anyone could make an 8-bit version of ‘Shadows Fall’ for a short scene in which we were depicted as pixel characters.”

“Nick said: ‘Duffy’s your man’. I’ve always been a bit of a gamer, so it was perfect for me. Everyone loved it so much that they said do the whole first album in 8-bit. Now it’s featured throughout the documentary.”

The doc in question is Dreaming Of You, directed by James Slater, which tells the story of the band’s formation and the recording of the debut album. It premiered last month at the Sheffield Doc Fest.

The Coral have spent this summer playing a number of major shows, supporting Supergrass in Margate, Blossoms in Derby, Kaiser Chiefs in Leeds and Elbow in Cardiff and Gloucestershire.

Their most recent album of new material was ‘Sea Of Mirrors’, their 11th record, which included appearances from Cillian Murphy and John Simm, as well as their former member Bill Ryder-Jones.
