Stevie Wonder responds to long-standing conspiracy that he’s not actually blind

Stevie Wonder has responded to a long-standing conspiracy that he’s not actually blind.

The legendary singer-songwriter has been subject to rumours that his blindness isn’t real – and Wonder has jokingly referenced this speculation before.

But at his show in Cardiff last week, Wonder officially addressed the conspiracy in a heartfelt speech. “I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now,” he began.

After acknowledging there had been rumours disputing his blindness, Wonder said: “Seriously, you know the truth.

“Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind,” he added. “Now, that was a blessing because it’s allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight. See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what colour they are, but what colour is their spirit?”

Wonder recently played a show at BST Hyde Park on Saturday July 12, following bill-topping sets there in 2016 and 2019. It was the final stop of his ‘Love, Light and Song’ tour, which also saw him visit Manchester, Birmingham and Lytham.

Ezra Collective, Thee Sacred Souls, Elmiene, Corinne Bailey Rae, Durand Bernarr, Hajaj, Mica Millar, LULU and Jon Poppii all supported Wonder on the day.

This year’s BST Hyde Park also saw Neil Young, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan headline. Jeff Lynne’s ELO was due to round off the series with their final show, but cancelled due to a “systemic infection”.

“The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff’s mind today – and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time,” a statement read.
