‘Stereophonic’ Extends Broadway Run for Final Time, Adds New Cast Members

Stereophonic, which follows a folk-rock quintet on the brink of blowing up, will extend its Broadway run, producers announced Monday. The production will extend its run through Jan. 12, 2025, which producers called Stereophonic’s final extension.

Cast members Sarah Pidgeon, Juliana Canfield, and Tom Pecinka, who have performed in the musical since the show opened in April, will deliver their final performances on Sept. 29. Amy Forsyth, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Benjamin Anthony Anderson will take over their respective roles as Diana, Holly, and Peter. The new cast will begin performances Oct. 1 at the Golden Theater.

Stereophonic takes place in 1976, as a band on the verge of stardom records their next album. The play draws several references to Fleetwood Mac, particularly the band’s smash 1977 album Rumours. Playwright David Adjmi has said several bands inspired the three-hour play, but Fleetwood Mac draws the closest comparison from the band’s fictional relationships to the album’s drug- and break-up-fueled backdrop.

At the Tony Awards in June, Stereophonic became the most nominated play in the award show’s history with 13 nods, beating out Slave Play’s previous record of 12. By the nights end, Stereophonic took home five trophies: Best New Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Featured Actor of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play.

Rolling Stone‘s Brittany Spanos called the production, “an absolute triumph of a show, a delicious four-course meal about a band packin’ up, shackin’ up, and attempting to keep their success going, as scary as it may seem,” in a review.
