Stereolab tease new music in packages sent to fans

Stereolab have teased that new music is on the way after sending mysterious packages out to fans in the post.

The art-rock group’s founding members Lætitia Sadier and Tim Gane reunited in 2019 with former bandmates Andy Ramsay and Joseph Watson after an initial run from 1990 to 2009.

Since then, the five-piece have toured the world and reissued their albums on vinyl as expanded editions that included rare demos and extensive liner notes. The band’s last album release was 2010’s ‘Not Music?’

Now, the band are teasing what appears to be a new album. As first reported in Brooklyn Vegan, the band send out their “Lab Report” newsletter on March 31 which included a link to an image with the words ‘Unsolicited Stereolab Material’ over it. After that, the band then took to Instagram to post a picture of a record.

Yesterday (April 2), UK fans received ‘Unsolicited Stereolab Material’ in the post, which featured a 7″ record with a song called ‘Aerial Troubles’ on one side and an instrumental on the other, plus a word search.

Reddit user Ape1720 shared details of the package he was sent yesterday and uploaded a snippet of the track ‘Aerial Trouble’. Other Reddit users on the thread uncovered words in the word search such as ‘Plastic Melodies,’ ‘Warp,’ ‘Sadier,’ “Tim Ramsay’ and ‘Album.’

Fans on the forum were speculating if these were song titles from a new album. ‘Warp’, seemingly referring to Warp Records, was also stamped on the package (as per First Floor).

Stereolab also reissued seven of their albums – from 1993’s ‘Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements’ to 2004’s ‘Margerine Eclipse’ earlier this year. They were released as standard editions that the band promised would “have a lower price point that will help fans and shops in the current economic environment,” as per the band’s manager Martin Pike.

“These new editions will use the 2019 remastered tracks, but they will no longer include the disk of demos or the track-by-track notes,” he revealed in an Instagram post. “The sleevenotes will be added to the archive on our website, and the demo versions will still be available to stream or purchase digitally.”

The albums are available to order here.
