Soundgarden‘s final album is now being mixed.

The iconic grunge band have long hinted they will release their final album with frontman Chris Cornell, who took his own life in 2017. The band were writing new material with Cornell in the period leading up to his death.

On the eighth anniversary of Cornell’s passing in 2025, Soundgarden teased what new music might sound like. “It feels good and invigorating to hear Chris singing from over that horizon”, they wrote at the time. That followed on from initial reports in 2023 that the band had settled a legal dispute with Cornell’s estate that included the rights to several unreleased songs. By the end of 2025, the band said they were “pretty close” to finishing the album.

Now, drummer Matt Cameron has confirmed the album is currently being mixed. On the Let There Be Talk podcast, Cameron said though the band don’t have a release date yet, “we’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next. We’re just taking it one step at a time ’cause it’s been kind of a long process just to get to here.”

Cameron also confirmed there would be eight songs with Cornell on the record. “I think that that’s pretty much all there is with vocals,” he remarked. “We had some instrumentals left over that [guitarist] Kim [Thayil] wants work on. So maybe we’ll do some new stuff together, which would be fine by me.”

Last year, Soundgarden were inducted by Jim Carrey into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The White Stripes, OutKast, Cyndi Lauper, Chubby Checker, Bad Company and Joe Cocker were also inducted on the night.

Carrey told the audience that night that he once hosted SNL and requested Soundgarden be the musical guest, and was gifted Cornell’s Fender Telecaster after the show. “When the Seattle music scene exploded, it resurrected rock and roll for me,” he said. “When I heard Soundgarden for the first time, I wasn’t just excited. I wanted to put a flannel shirt on and run into the streets screaming, ‘My mother smoked during pregnancy!’”

Elsewhere, Tom Morello has shared an update on unheard Audioslave material.
