Snoop Dogg Was Unprepared to Explain Same-Sex Couple in ‘Lightyear’ to Grandson

When Snoop Dogg watched Disney’s Lightyear, he felt as though he had been put on the spot when his grandson asked questions about the same-sex couple in the film. During a recent appearance on the It’s Giving… Podcast, the rapper recounted the experience in a segment from the episode that has since been deleted from the YouTube upload.

“They move on into the space years, and as they move down the line they’re like, ‘Then, she had a baby with a woman,’” Snoop said. “Now, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman.’ Ah shit, I didn’t come in here for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”

In Lightyear, which was released in 2022, Buzz Lightyear’s best friend Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) reveals that she is engaged to Kiko, the grandmother of a character voiced by Keke Palmer. In clips of their future, the couple raises a son together. At their 40th anniversary celebration, they share a kiss. Kiko eventually grows old and dies. It’s an uncomplicated story.

Snoop recalled telling his grandson to just watch the movie, but he wanted answers. “Uh uh, they just said, she and she had a baby — they both women. How does she have a baby?” he said his grandson responded, which he countered with, “Shh, the movie ain’t over yet.” He doesn’t address whether they continued the conversation at a later point in time.

“I’m scared to go to the movies now,” Snoop said. “Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.” The clip being removed from the initial upload has, in turn, removed some context from the conversation.

Representatives for Snoop Dogg did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.

The cut is noticeable at the 31-minute mark, where Snoop can be heard saying, “It’s what you see. They’re putting it everywhere,” then the video jumps to a different topic. Just before, podcast host Sarah Fontenot spoke about masculinity and femininity. “I feel like we’re inverted, especially in our community where women are much more masculine and men are much more feminine, and I don’t like that,” she said.

In the clip that was removed, Snoop said the Lightyear scene “threw me for a loop,” adding, “I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

In the next scene, Fontenot moves the conversation toward depression and anxiety in children, saying the solution is for them to drink water, eat healthier, and play outside.

“Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good,” Chris Evans, who voices Buzz in the film, told Reuters Television in 2022. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
