SHINee’s Key says “there should be regulations” on using AI in music

SHINee’s Key has shared his thoughts on the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in music, following the release of his new mini-album, ‘Pleasure Shop’.

Yesterday (September 23), SHINee’s Key held a press event for the release of ‘Pleasure Shop’ where he spoke about the use of AI in music. Notably, the singer revealed that “some of the graphics in the music video” for the album’s title track were created by AI.

The video features the K-pop star him facing off with an AI version of himself. “I imagined what it would be like in the future, but a dystopian one, and put myself in that situation,” he shared, per Korea JoongAng Daily. “I believe that tech development brings goodness, as long as it’s not used wrongly.”

“I do hope that it doesn’t beat humans, though, because I’ve listened to AI cover songs. I heard my voice singing someone else’s song that I never sang, which was really interesting but scary,” Key added. “I do believe that there should be regulations in this respect.”

‘Pleasure Shop’ comes a year after the singer dropped his second mini-album ‘Good & Great’. In a four-star review of the record, NME’s Tamar Herman wrote that it fulfils “the promise of both ‘goodness’ as well as ‘greatness’, with a sense of awareness that comes with the air of someone who has found confidence in their art and place in the world.”

In other K-pop news, fellow SM Entertainment girl group aespa have announced their upcoming return with their fifth mini-album ‘Whiplash’. The six-track record will land in October, just five months after their first studio album ‘Armageddon’ earlier this year.
