Selena Gomez On Whether ‘Only Murders’ Co-Stars Steve Martin & Martin Short Are Invited to Her Wedding: ‘Marty’s the Ring Bearer’

The Only Murders in the Building gang visited The Tonight Show on Tuesday night (Sept. 9) and co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short did their best approximation of a warm greeting by instantly, brutally roasting host Jimmy Fallon. “Jimmy Fallon! Or as the Epstein files know you as ‘redacted,’” Short quipped. “Look how handsome you are. Really. Your teeth as so white… your smile is like an email from Trump… all caps.”

Martin tried to help Fallon save face, noting that they were trying to be funny, but of all the late night hosts, “I’ll miss you most when you are deported to Uganda.”

Then the trio got down to the most important business at hand: dishing on Selena Gomez‘s upcoming nuptials to producer Benny Blanco. “It’s wonderful. I’m very lucky. It’s going well, I’m so excited,” she said, as Martin added that he was sure her co-star’s invites will arrive “any day now.”

Gomez confirmed that “of course” the dynamic duo are invited, noting that Short is going to be the ring bearer, as he did a Gollum bit right on cue before busting into his overenthusiastic wedding planner character Franck Eggelhoffer from Father of the Bride.

“We are all so excited because we love this lady,” Short said in a rare moment of sincerity he let linger for nearly four seconds. “And we love her fiancé… Bad Bunny,” he added, as Gomez, perfectly on cue, looked up horrified at the name miscue. “Benny Blanco,” she hissed with practiced annoyance. “That’s two different people?” Martin wondered.

They trio did triple-duty during their appearance, also pre-taping a cold open bit where they pulled a Freaky Friday. After an enthusiastic greeting from Fallon, they put their hands in to wish for a good show and a flash of lighting caused them to change voices, with Gomez emerging with Martin’s, Fallon slipping into a higher register with Gomez’s, Martin devastated at sounding like longtime friend and butt of his jokes Short.

“What could be worse that that?” Martin as Short lamented. “Having Jimmy Fallon’s voice,” Martin shot back. They swapped it up a few more times until they all got their voices back, except Fallon, who ended up with Roots rapper Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter’s voice. The MC fell to his knees and howled when he realized he’d been saddled with his boss’ “shrill” delivery.

Short, Martin and Gomez also joined Fallon for a game of Catchphrase in which everyone except Martin figured out Short’s clues for Bigfoot. “I can think of 100 better clues,” an exasperated Martin said, as Short dared him to try. “He lives in the forest and he’s a myth,” Martin said, with Short proving why the pair are a comedy match made in heaven with the lightning fast, lisping rejoinder, “Well, what if he’s a missus?”

The fifth season of Only Murders in the Building is streaming on Hulu now.
