Selena Gomez Gives Us a ‘Fun, Edgy’ Look at Her ‘In the Dark’ Video for ‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 2 Song

Nobody Wants This show creator Erin Foster needed a song to convey the emotional weight for a scene in episode 10 of Season Two, and she found it with Selena Gomez‘s “In the Dark.” Now, the pop star takes us behind the scenes in an exclusive video about making the “In the Dark” visual and song for the show’s new season.

“I’m not sure if anyone has heard of this really cool, popular show, Nobody Wants This, on Netflix. I’m shooting a music video for my little part. I’m proud and happy, and we’re bringing a vibe,” says Gomez in the video. In the clip, Gomez can be seen creating the visuals inside a photo studio, posing in multiple outfits, and in front of several vibrant backdrops as a high-tech camera follows her.

“We’re making it really fun, edgy, and cool, which is what I envision the song to feel like,” she adds later in the video. “I’m super stoked for you guys to see the fun looks. It’s probably the shortest video I’ve ever done!”

Foster, who created and executive-produces the comedy series, tells Rolling Stone in a statement that “In the Dark” captured the “universal feeling of fighting for your relationship even when everything feels uncertain,” during a key scene in the show.

“We knew we needed a song that could hold the weight of that moment — where Joanne [Kristen Bell] and Noah [Adam Brody] are putting on a brave face at Morgan’s engagement party, but underneath they’re falling apart,” Foster explains. “‘In The Dark’ felt like it was written for that exact emotional state: Pretending everything’s fine when it’s not, reaching for connection even when you’re hurting. Selena’s voice has this aching vulnerability that made the scene feel even more raw. It captures that.”

Simon Tickman, the CEO and co-founder of The Core Entertainment who worked with Interscope Records on the show’s soundtrack and is married to Foster, tells Rolling Stone that the team wanted the music for it to “feel like a character in the show” with songs that could stand on their own during “key moments.”

“This was a really important song to Selena — she had plans to release it earlier this summer, but she believed in the project enough to hold it for us,” Tikhman says. “Having an artist of her caliber anchor the season finale with a song that means so much to her personally was exactly what we were going for.”

Appearing on the packed soundtrack for the second season of Nobody Wants This, “In the Dark” features alongside songs such as “If the World Burns Down” by Kacey Musgraves, “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” by Teddy Swims, “What” by Benee, “Homesick” by Cuco, and “Heart Letting Go” by Chris Stapleton.
