Rich Homie Quan Died From an Accidental Drug Overdose

Fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, promethazine, and THC were found in the artist’s system, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner

Rich Homie Quan’s cause of death was ruled an accidental drug overdose, according the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday.

Fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, promethazine, and THC were found in the rapper’s system, per the medical examiner’s report obtained by People. Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died Sept. 5 at the age of 34.

Lamar was found unresponsive at his home in Atlanta by his girlfriend. Police officers did not determine any foul play, stating that “Mr. Lamar did not appear to be alert, conscious, or breathing,” and said that they were advised that he did not have “any medical or underlying illness.”

His family shared a tribute days after his death. “Known to the world as Rich Homie Quan, Dequantes Devontay Lamar was a proud native of the great city of Atlanta, Georgia and represented for the A as he and his music traveled across this globe,” read the statement shared with People. “Quan’s legacy will forever be cemented as a soundtrack to our lives. And for this, we are grateful.”

The artist created Atlanta rap hits in the 2010s as a solo artist and member of Rich Gang. His breakout song, the 2013 hit “Type of Way,” reached Billboard’s Top 50. The track was remixed by Lil Wayne and Meek Mill, boosting his prominence in the industry. Lamar also collaborated with Young Thug and Birdman, forming the supergroup Rich Gang, and created popular Billboard Hot 100 tracks “Lifestyle” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).”

As the beloved artist was laid to rest at his funeral on Sept. 17, the City Council of Atlanta announced that “this day.. [is] Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day in our fair city.”
