Rhian Teasdale feared that Wet Leg’s success was a ‘freak incident’

Rhian Teasdale has revealed that she thought that Wet Leg’s initial success was nothing more than a “freak accident”.

The singer spoke to People about the success that the band has felt since breaking through with their debut 2022 self-titled album. The comments come as their sophomore album ‘Moisturizer’ has been nominated for three awards at next month’s Grammys.

Speaking to the outlet about getting the Grammy nods, Teasdale said that she and her bandmates had almost accepted that they were not going to be nominated this year, just moments before they found out.

“Literally two seconds before we got the call, I was saying to Ellis [Durand, bassist], ‘It would be really nice to get nominated because it is really fun to get to go and be a part of it. But, this time, it’s not our turn. It’s someone else’s turn’, she said. “And then we got the call, it was like, ‘What?’ We were just kind of making peace with not being invited along this year.”

Teasdale continued to share that even after playing huge headline shows and booking mammoth festival slots over the years, she is still caught off guard by the band’s success, and initially doubted whether the first wave of success was set to last or not.

“It’s just crazy to see your band’s name next to legitimate artists who’ve been in the industry for a long time and who’ve maybe inspired you to make music,” she explained. “We were very much prepared for, ‘The first album was just this mad, freak incident.’ We weren’t really expecting that for album two, so it’s just really nice.”

Later in the interview, the singer described their second album as “the most natural thing” for the band to work on, and shared that they wrote it at a house that they rented in the countryside – just like their debut album.

“We’ve all got matching friendship rings (that say) ‘Wet Leg Forever’,” she continued, going on to share why she is better suited to a group than a solo project.

“It’s definitely good being in a band because I think you always are your own worst critic. If it was just me on my own, I’d be like, ‘Is this a stupid idea? Yeah, it probably is’, and that would be the end of it. So I think it’s really important for [us to keep] encouraging each other.”

At the end of last year, ‘Moisturizer’ was named as the 22nd best album of 2025 by NME, and celebrated as having tracks that “could go toe-to-toe” with the best aspects of their breakthrough debut record.

The second album dropped last July, and went to Number One in the UK albums chart. In a four-star review of the record, NME wrote: “After the whirlwind that was Wet Leg’s debut album, it would have been easy for the band to capitulate under the pressure or just play it safe and remake that record.

“But on their second effort, they’ve evolved into a smarter, sexier and altogether stronger creature. Would we still love Wet Leg if they turned into a worm? With this album under their belts, the answer is undoubtedly yes.”

At the upcoming Grammys ceremony, the band are up for awards in the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Album Cover categories. They also received a nod in the Best Alternative Music Performance category for their single ‘Mangetout’.

Back in November, the band teased that their third studio album is already finished.
