Paul McCartney’s Stolen Bass Guitar Saga Will Be Told in New Documentary

The Beatle and the Bass will feature a new interview with McCartney himself

Last year, Paul McCartney was reunited with his long-lost bass guitar 51 years after it disappeared. The saga has been turned into a new documentary titled The Beatle and the Bass Guitar.

The new film is produced by Passion Pictures, which won a BAFTA this year with Sundance hit Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. It was commissioned by BBC Arts. McCartney will be featured in the film to discuss the long journey to being reunited with the instrument after it was stolen. “I think anything that’s nicked, you want back, especially if it has sentimental value. It just went off into the universe, and it left us thinking, ‘Where did it go?’ There must be an answer…” he said in a statement, via Variety.

Dubbed “the most important bass in history,” McCartney first bought the Höfner in 1961 when he was 18. It was played on numerous iconic Beatles tracks. In 1972, however, the bass was stolen, and its whereabouts remained a mystery until a grassroots campaign, known as the Lost Bass Project, aimed to locate the bass and return it to McCartney. The Beatle confirmed the guitar had been returned to him last year.
